Dentistry and Your Health

Proper oral health is much more than just taking care of your teeth, it offers clues to your total health. Here are some ways healthy teeth lead to a healthy body:

Gum Disease and Heart Disease

Research shows that several types of cardiovascular disease may be linked to oral health including heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke. Bacteria in the mouth can enter the bloodstream and can attach to plaque in the arteries, leading to clots and restriction of blood flow.

Gum Disease and Pregnancy

Women who have poor dental health are seven times more likely to have a premature baby or a baby with low birth weight. Talk to Dr. McKoy if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant to determine the best treatment plan for you.

Gum Disease and Diabetes

There is a very strong link between diabetes and gum disease. Research now shows that those with gum disease have a higher risk for diabetes and those with diabetes have a harder time controlling their blood sugar if they also have gum disease.
